Jio vs Airtel Roaming vs eSIM: 2026 Prices

Short answer: for data, a travel eSIM is usually cheaper than a Jio or Airtel roaming pack. In Thailand, a 1 GB, 7-day Simnity eSIM costs ₹380, against Jio's ₹599 data pack and Airtel's ₹698 one-day pack. Roaming still wins in two cases: when you need lots of calls on your Indian number, and in the USA, where Jio's US pack is strong value. Prices checked 28 Oct 2026.

How each option works

  • Jio or Airtel roaming: you keep using your Indian SIM abroad and buy an international roaming (IR) pack before you fly. Calls and SMS work on your normal number; data comes from a fixed allowance.
  • A travel eSIM (Simnity): a second, data-only line you install in India over Wi-Fi. It switches on when you land, and your Indian SIM stays in the phone for calls and OTPs, with its data off.

Jio lists the same packs for all of these countries. Airtel sells one pack set that works in all the countries it covers.

Dubai and the UAE

Jio Gulf packSimnity UAE eSIM
1 week₹898 for 1 GB, 7 days + 100 min + 100 SMS₹380 for 1 GB, 7 days
2–3 weeks₹2,998 for 7 GB, 21 days + 250 min₹1,900 for 10 GB, 30 days

USA: where roaming can win

Jio US, Mexico & Canada packSimnity USA eSIM
2 weeks₹1,555 for 12 GB, 15 days + 150 min, unlimited incoming calls₹2,138 for 10 GB, 30 days
1 month₹2,555 for 25 GB, 30 days + 250 min, unlimited incoming calls₹3,468 for 20 GB, 30 days

If you are on Jio and going to the US for a month, Jio's pack gives more data plus calls for less money. A Simnity eSIM is the better buy for short or light US trips (₹380 for 1 GB, 7 days), and for Airtel users, whose single pack set has no US-specific option.

What happens without a pack

  • Jio charges ₹0.02 per 10 KB of data in most of these countries, about ₹2 per MB.
  • Airtel's standard charges list ₹6.5 per 10 KB, about ₹666 per MB. One map-heavy day without a pack can cost more than a whole eSIM.

Sources, checked 28 Oct 2026: Jio IR packs and tariffs per country (jio.com); Airtel IR pack table, T&C and standard charges (airtel.in); Simnity prices from the live catalogue. Airtel says its 5-day and 10-day pack prices were revised from 29 Jul 2026 and the new figures are not on its public table, so we left those two packs out.

Keeping your Indian number for bank and UPI OTPs

This is the main worry for most travellers, and it works with either choice.

  • Jio prepaid: Jio says incoming SMS are free while roaming. Prepaid users have to buy an IR pack at least once to switch roaming on, so check it is active before you fly.
  • Airtel prepaid: instead of a full pack, Airtel offers a ₹118 IR activation, valid 28 days, with unlimited incoming SMS. You need an active domestic plan, and calls and data are charged at standard rates, so keep mobile data off on the Airtel line.
  • With an eSIM: set the travel eSIM as your data line and leave the Indian SIM on for SMS with roaming data off. OTP messages still arrive on your Indian number.

When to pick which

  • Pick a Jio or Airtel pack if you will make many calls on your Indian number, your phone does not support eSIM, you are a Jio user going to the US for weeks, or you travel so often that an annual pack is simpler.
  • Pick a travel eSIM if you mostly need data (maps, cabs, WhatsApp, Instagram), want more GB for the money, or would rather install at home than queue at an airport SIM counter.

WhatsApp calls work over the eSIM's data, so many travellers skip paid minutes completely.

Set it up before you leave India

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM: device list.
  2. Buy the eSIM for your destination and install it at home on Wi-Fi (install guide).
  3. When you land, switch on the eSIM line and turn on data roaming for that line only.
  4. Keep your Indian SIM on for calls and SMS, with its data off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an eSIM cheaper than Jio international roaming?

For data, usually. In Thailand, 5 GB on a Simnity eSIM costs ₹760 for 30 days, while Jio's 5 GB data pack costs ₹2,999 for 7 days (prices checked 28 Oct 2026). The exception is the USA, where Jio's ₹2,555 pack includes 25 GB and calls for 30 days.

Is an eSIM cheaper than Airtel international roaming?

For data, yes on most trips. Airtel's ₹2,998 pack gives 10 GB and 300 minutes for 30 days, while 10 GB for 30 days on a Simnity eSIM costs ₹1,045 in Thailand and ₹1,520 in France.

Will I get OTPs if I use an eSIM?

Yes, if your Indian SIM stays switched on. Jio says incoming SMS are free while roaming. Airtel prepaid users can enable roaming with a ₹118, 28-day activation that includes unlimited incoming SMS.

Can I use Jio or Airtel and an eSIM at the same time?

Yes. Most eSIM phones run two lines. Use the eSIM for data and the Indian SIM for calls and SMS.

Does a Simnity eSIM give me a phone number?

No. Simnity travel plans are data only unless a plan says it includes voice or SMS. Use WhatsApp or other apps for calls.
